Love for mediocrity

I learnt a very important lesson today in my Training programme. The programme was to make us understand the new corporate vision, mission and values for the firm. But my eternal pursuit to understand Human behaviour led me to a unpleasant discovery of the power of democracy.

The HR exercise was to form three teams. And each team to build a new logo for the firm reflecting all the values we have identified to establish our mission and vision. So we formed a team of 5,5 and 4. While we all brainstormed and came up with our own logos. Each team presented their logos and explained the same. All agreed that Group 1 had done a better job than the rest, Group 2 was mediocre and Group 3 the worst. We had a vote so that we could have a winner. The rules were that we cannot vote for ourselves but only for the other team.

Guess who had won?? If your answer was Group 2, you can say you understand Indians very well.

So I analyse why had Group 1 failed, despite having done a very good job and when everyone agreed that they had done a excellent job before voting.

Well i could come up with only one answer, majority wins. In a group of people, though we know that someone had done a excellent job, they dint want the best team to win because they cannot identify themselves with the best ones.

So what happened ? Group 3 voted for Group 2 because they don't want to reward the best ones. Group 2 divided their votes between Group 1 and 3 because some were honest to accept that Group 1 did a better job and some did not want Group 1 to win.

Group 1 had no choice but to vote for the other two teams only. Group 1 were not only good performers but were also people who can reward achievement and not mediocre performance. They had all voted for the second best thing. So wins Group 2!!!

I think this applies to everything that goes around us... I can also relate to why once people hated Jews.... I think its also because they were extremely talented people.
